There are probably many tips and tricks that you’ve heard about and tried in the pursuit of healthier, shinier and more manageable hair. The problem is that, not all of them are true
Here are some of the most common hair care myths that we hear from our guests in the salon. Let us know in the comments section below which ones surprise you or if there’s any others you’d like to add:
Trimming hair will make it grow faster
Cutting your hair will have no influence on how fast it grows from your scalp. For the average human, hair will grow around half an inch per month. The rate can vary from person to person and can also be affected by health, diet, hormones, the time of year and the condition of your scalp/ hair follicles.
If your goal is to grow your hair longer then keeping the ends of your hair healthy by having regular trims will help prevent your hair from splitting and breaking, therefore make it easier for your hair become longer, quicker.
Switch products regularly so that hair will not build a tolerance to them
Hair has no way of knowing if you’re switching products because its basically dead, it can’t develop any kind of tolerance from any kind of hair product so there’s really no point in changing your hair care regimen without good reason.
According to a London-based hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley, your choice of shampoo and conditioner will practically work the same way and will have the same effect on your hair no matter how long you use them.
Should the texture & condition of your hair change over time, a change of products may be required to suit.
You shouldn’t dye your hair when you’re pregnant
There is no evidence to suggest that having your hair coloured can affect your pregnancy in any way.
Having said that, at such a precious time, it is wise to be cautious about what you expose your body to. With all the chemical fumes and hair spray in the air, a hair salon may not be an ideal environment to spend a prolonged amount of time.
It’s better to brush your hair when it’s wet
The hair is at its weakest when wet and more prone to breakage whilst brushing.
Before washing your hair, it’s better to brush your hair with a soft brush when it’s dry in order to remove the majority of tangles and knots. When applying shampoo, try not to tangle the hair further by rubbing it together. Comb your towel dried hair again with a Tangle Teezer before blow drying and styling.
Be sure to brush your hair from the end/ tip and work your way up to the root in order to avoid worsening knots and tangles.
Split Ends Can be repaired
There are many hair conditioners and products out there claiming to treat split ends. We hate to break it to you but once there is a split, that’s it. There’s no magic solution that will restore split ends back to normal.
What products can do is help replace the cuticles of the hair shaft to the make the hair smooth. The only way to remove split ends is to cut them before they split further up the hair shaft.
Hair will become shiny and smooth with a cold rinse in the morning
Drenching your hair with cold water will not make it more shiny or frizz-free. While it’s true that cold water can close the cuticles making the hair shaft smoother, this effect will only last up until the time you apply heat to the hair when blow drying and styling.
Plucking grey hair will make more appear
I can see why people think this is the case because here is what usually happens…
You notice your first grey hair and decide to pull it out. A few weeks later you look again and there are now two or three grey hairs that have come out of nowhere.
The appearance of any newly sprouted grey hair is not down to pulling out another, it’s just means that your hair that is losing its pigment is concentrated in a certain area of your scalp. The number will probably increase steadily from there on in.
