Is it Safe to Have Colour Services While Pregnant?

Pregnancy naturally raises questions about what is safe. Hair colour is one of the most common concerns. While many people continue to colour their hair, the right approach is to have the facts and make an informed choice.

What the Experts Say

Medical guidance suggests that hair colouring during pregnancy is generally safe. Only very small amounts of colour are absorbed through the scalp, and current research shows no evidence of risk to the baby. [NHS]

That said, every pregnancy is different. We always recommend speaking with your GP or midwife before booking a colour service.

Types of Colour Services

  • Highlights in foils: The colour does not touch the scalp, so exposure is minimal. This is often the preferred option during pregnancy.

  • Toners and glosses: May touch the scalp and sit there for 5–10 minutes, so exposure is slightly higher.

  • Permanent/scalp colour: Root touch-ups or full-head tints involve direct scalp contact. Many clients still choose them, though some prefer to wait until after the first trimester.

The Salon Environment

You’ll spend time in a space where colour services are being carried out. Our salons are well ventilated, but there are still chemicals in the air. If you feel sensitive to smells or uncomfortable at any point, let your stylist know.

Tips for Pregnant Clients

  • Speak with your GP or midwife first.

  • Consider foils if you’d like to limit scalp contact.

  • Always have a fresh patch test, as sensitivity can change during pregnancy.

  • Let us know if you need breaks or adjustments to stay comfortable.

  • If you’d rather wait, we can suggest non-colour services to keep your hair looking and feeling great.
