If covering your roots has started to feel like a chore, you might be wondering what your options are. Keep colouring? Grow it all out? Try something different?

Grey blending gives you more options. You can introduce more of your natural grey, soften the contrast as your hair grows, or keep a colour you love with less obvious regrowth.

At Tribe, we start with how you want to feel, how you want your hair to look and how much time you want to spend maintaining it. There’s no pressure to embrace your greys, and no reason to cover them unless you want to.

What is grey blending?

Grey blending is a personalised approach to colour that works with the mix of pigmented and grey hairs you already have. The aim is to soften the difference between them, rather than create solid coverage over every grey.

As we explain in our guide to grey blending (below), this might involve fine highlights, babylights or balayage, leaving some of your natural greys visible. A demi-permanent colour can also give a softer, more translucent result than full coverage.

Highlights introduce lighter pieces, lowlights add depth, and a gloss can refine the tone and shine. These are different tools your colourist can combine to suit your hair.

The right combination depends on your natural colour, where your greys appear, your previous colour and the result you want.

Can I blend my greys and still feel brunette?

Yes. Grey blending doesn’t have to mean becoming blonde or going fully silver.

Faye came to Tribe because she was tired of covering her roots. She wanted a change, but she still wanted to feel brunette and wasn’t ready to be as grey as her natural regrowth.

Anneliese at Clapham lightened tiny sections through the mid-lengths and ends to echo Faye’s natural greys. She then glazed the remaining hair with a cool brunette that fades gradually, creating less noticeable regrowth than her previous colour approach.

That gave Faye a choice: continue with the brunette glaze or allow more of her natural colour to grow through.

What if I want to grow out my colour completely?

Grey blending can also help make the transition from coloured lengths to natural grey less noticeable. This can be a more involved appointment, particularly when there’s existing colour to work through.

When Alix came to Tribe, she wanted to stop colouring and return to her natural grey. Removing old colour doesn’t simply restore the natural shade underneath. Anneliese created a custom mix of light and dark shades, with placement designed to match Alix’s salt-and-pepper regrowth.

Her colour, cut and styling appointment took five hours. That was Alix’s individual appointment, rather than a standard time for every grey blending service.

Does grey blending mean less maintenance?

It can. A softer contrast can make regrowth less noticeable, giving you more flexibility between colour appointments.

But lower maintenance still involves some upkeep. You may want to refresh a gloss or toner, maintain selected highlights, or adjust the blend as more grey grows through.

As we shared in our post about the different approaches to grey blending, it doesn’t always need to be a big colour change. Sometimes a different colour type or placement is enough. For other people, moving away from years of full coverage needs a longer-term plan.

We’ll talk through the initial work, likely upkeep and cost so you can decide what feels manageable.
