Curly Hair Colour

Colour that works with your curls — not against them.

At Tribe, we don’t separate services by hair texture — but we do understand that curls need a different kind of care.

Colouring curly, wavy, or coily hair isn’t just about tone or placement — it’s about working with the hair’s structure, porosity, and movement to keep your curls healthy and defined.

Whether you’re lightening, blending greys, or going bold with vibrants, we customise every step of the process. From the consultation through to the finish, we adapt our techniques to your curl type and condition — so you get colour that looks great and curls that feel like yours.

Did you know?

Curly hair often looks darker once dry because it coils and reflects less light — so we adjust your tone and placement to make sure the colour reads just right when styled.

What We Do Differently

Curly hair is naturally more porous and often drier than straight hair, which means it absorbs colour differently — and sometimes fades faster. The way curls shrink and reflect light also affects how tone appears when dry. That’s why we take time to assess your curl pattern, porosity, and past colour history before we start.

We avoid over-processing, especially around the hairline and ends where curls are most fragile. Instead, we apply colour in a way that supports curl movement and shape — careful not to disrupt it. It’s not a different service, just a different approach — one that’s built around care and understanding.

Texture Aware Colour Options

Every colour service at Tribe is available for curly hair — we just personalise how we do it. Balayage and freehand painting work beautifully to enhance the shape of curls, adding dimension and lift without harsh lines. Glossing and toning refresh colour while boosting shine and definition, especially on textured hair that naturally reflects less light.

Root tints and grey blending are applied with your curl pattern and regrowth in mind, and even bold creative colour — from face-framing panels to full vivid looks — is placed intentionally to enhance your curls.

Maintenance

Aftercare for Curls with Colour

Coloured curls need the right care to stay defined, moisturised, and vibrant. Because curls are often more porous, they can lose colour faster — so your aftercare matters just as much as the service itself.

We’ll walk you through how to keep your curls healthy post-colour: from sulphate-free shampoos and cool water rinses to Aveda’s curl-friendly styling products that help protect tone and shape. If you need it, we’ll also build a personalised home care routine that fits your lifestyle — so your colour lasts longer and your curls stay strong.

Curly Hair Colour FAQ

Will colour damage my curls?

Not if it’s done carefully and with the right products. Curly hair is more delicate by nature, especially where it bends and coils. That’s why we use Aveda’s plant-based colour system and add bond-building treatments when needed. Our approach is designed to protect curl health and shape throughout the colour process.

Do I need a consultation first?

Due to the personalised nature of our colour appointments, we require a consultation prior to booking colour — especially if you’re new or if you’re planning a big change.

A consultation gives us time to understand your curl type, condition, colour goals, and what’s realistic. It also means we can book the right amount of time and give you a clear quote in advance.

Can I get balayage on coils or afro hair?

Yes. Balayage isn’t just for straight or wavy hair — it’s all about adapting the technique. On curls and coils, we apply lightener in a way that follows the natural shape of your hair, enhancing movement and definition.

How long will my colour last on curls?

That depends on the type of colour, how porous your curls are, and your aftercare routine. Because textured hair can be more porous, vibrants and pastels tend to fade faster. We’ll help you choose a tone and plan a maintenance routine that works for your lifestyle and hair type.

Do you colour relaxed or chemically treated hair?

We do, but we take extra care. If your hair has been relaxed, texturised, or previously coloured, we’ll assess its condition first. Sometimes it’s best to strengthen the hair before going in with colour — and we’ll always be honest if we think a different approach is safer for your curls.
