Summers nearly here and the nice weather can really lift your mood and confidence.
Everyone knows that skin protection products are essential in the hot weather; however, protection for the hair is often over looked. Summer sun can dramatically change the appearance and condition of your hair so here are some tips on how to protect your hair this summer.
Like your skin, the condition of your hair can be affected by rays from the sun. Too much exposure to UVA, UVB and the most damaging UVC rays can bleach, dry-out and cause your hair to split.
Your hair naturally lightening in the sun can in some cases give a nice subtle change to your hair, but this lightening is a sign of sun damage.
If your hair is coloured then you will find your hair is even more susceptible to the bleaching effect that the sun can have on your hair. It could cause excessive dryness and drastically change colour.
This kind of damage is very hard to repair so it is a good idea to keep coloured hair well protected from excessive exposure to the sun.
There are lots of specialist products out there designed to protect your hair from the sun. Any product that has this feature will clearly state on the packaging.
Your stylist at Tribe can help recommend the best protective products suited for your hair type and condition.
Holidays & Swimming
When on holiday or visiting a hot climate, it is always best to take your own hair products with you. When exposing your hair to the sun it is advisable to use high quality products that are slightly more moisturising then your every day products.
When relaxing on the beach or by the pool, follow these steps for keeping your hair beautiful condition
- Cleanse your hair in the morning
- Apply and leave in your conditioner or treatment
- Use a heat resistant product with UV Protection
- Comb through and tie up hair out of the way
On returning from your visit to the beach or pool, cleanse the conditioning products out of your hair and continue with your usual washing and styling routine.
If your hair is particularly porous and goes frizzy in the heat, then additional moisture is needed, ask your stylist for advice on what would be best for your hair.
When swimming in a chlorinated swimming pool the metal ions which are used to stop algae forming can get into the hair fibre cause the hair to feel hard and tangled.
If hair is porous they can also cause the hair to take on a green tinge. Sea and salt water can also crystallise on the surface on your hair, weakening the structure and changing your hair texture and making it harder to manage.
To stop your hair being damaged by swimming on holiday, make sure that the hair is well protected beforehand, using the right products. A good tip is to rinse the hair in fresh water and applying conditioner before swimming, this will add more protection. You should also make sure your hair is thoroughly cleansed and conditioned after swimming.
Before your holiday you should visit your salon for a good cut, possibly one that is simple and easy for you to manage on holiday. Ask for advice about managing your hair and recommended products for you to use whilst away.
Remember that hair is very hard to repair so prevention is always better than cure. Call the salon to today and book a pre-salon appointment.
