A bad hair day can be fixed easily by accessorising with cute hats or wearing your hair up, but oily roots can be much more of a challenge as it can make your hair look greasy and flat
Greasy hair is usually caused by an excess amount of an oily substance called Sebum which is produced by the sebaceous glands in your scalp.
Sebum’s main job is to provide a protective shield that stops your hair follicles from being infected by harmful bacteria. It also pushes dead skin cells from the follicle to the surface and prevents your scalp from drying out.
When the scalp has an excess amount of sebum, it can saturate the roots of your hair, causing the hair to look greasy, unclean and clumped together – which isn’t very flattering.
Hair can also be made to look greasy when there is a build up of hair/ styling products.
How do you combat greasy hair?
Win the fight against oily and greasy hair by keeping your hair looking oil-free and fresh with these simple tips:
Wash you hair often, but not too often
By washing your hair too frequently, you will be stripping your scalp of its protective layer. Your scalp will respond to this by producing even more sebum to recover.
If you have particularly greasy hair and feel that you have to wash your hair daily, then make sure that the shampoo that you are using is gentle and will not totally strip your scalp of its natural oils.
Stop Touching Your Hair
How many times you touch your hair throughout the day?
Chances are, you do it way too often because our hands, just like our scalps also produce natural oil. Therefore if you keep running your fingers through your locks, the oil from your hands will be transferred to your hair.
If you also moisturise your hand using nourishing creams, the residues will also make their way to your hair and weigh it down. If you really need to touch your hair, make sure you wash your hands first with soap and water to remove any oily build up.
Put Down That Hair Brush
If you brush your hair too much, you will stimulate your scalp and its sebaceous glands to produce more oil than the usual. Brushing will also distribute excess oils from the scalp down to the hair shaft and hair tips making your locks greasier.
Choose the right hair products
Use oil-free hair products and make sure you have a high quality (preferably sulphate free) shampoo that is very gentle on your scalp. Conditioners should be nourishing without being heavy to ensure that your hair isn’t weighed down after using them.
Applying conditioner
If you suffer from oily hair, be careful about how you apply conditioner to your hair. Try to use the the conditioner only where it’s needed. This is usually on the dryer ends and mid-lengths of your hair, without going near the root.
Keep your hair away from your face
Your face and especially your fore head can be very oily. If this is true for you then it is a good idea to avoid fringes and other styles where your hair will regularly come come into contact with your face.
